Problem with saving a favicon

Does anyone here know anything about favicons?! I tried to create a favicon.ico file - it works, but for some reason when I saved the file, the main colour turned from orange to yellow.

Can anyone help and tell me what's going on?!

Thanks,

Paul

It seems my URL has been cut from my post, presumably because that's against policy, and I don't know what sticky mail is... so I'm really not sure what I'm meant to do here.

I have been on other sites which supposedly have orange favicons but again they appear as yellow on all the machines I have here... could it be something to do with the display settings on the machines?

The machine I am currently on is set to display 65536 colours so I wouldn't have thought there should be a problem...

Paul

PS - Do people like the favicon?! We had a lot of trouble trying to create something so small...

Sounds like that's probably it, if they're orange elsewhere, but yellow on your machines.

The color shift may have come from whatever software you are using to create the .ico format. No matter how many colors your machine is set for, the software needs to apply a palette. Because icons can be restricted to as few as 16 colors, your software may default to a very limited palette.

NFFC... thanks, I got the message... although I'm still puzzled as to what sticky mail is.

To tedster... I understand what you say, but that doesn't (I don't think) explain why some people saw the icon as orange (it seems I'm not allowed to post the URL so only the first few to have seen my post will know what I'm referring to) yet I see it as yellow (on all machines at work, but not my home machine)...

?

Stickymail is the webmasterworld's internal mail system. if you click on a person's user profile then click on the members name you can send a personal message.

i have stickymailed you so at the top of the screen it should read : You have mail: [ 1 ]

click on the [ 1 ] to read and reply .

This is not the favicon for the site in your profile, is it?

I don't get a favicon there, at any rate. If you want, you could switch your profile site for a while and just refer us to it. When the issue is resolved, you can sitch back.

I hope you appreciate the value that this board gains by limiting urls in posts, as frustrating as that may be at times. The absence of promotion, whether overt or sneaky, is one of the factors that keeps the level of helpful information here maxed.

Please Sticky Mail me the url if you don't want to change your profile. I'm big into favicons right now, and I'd love to see what's going on.

To DaveN... I didn't get your message. It does read Sticky Mail [1] but that's the earlier message from NFCC.

To tedster (and everyone)... I've edited my profile so it gives the Web address in question. (If I've done that right, you should see a URL containing the word 'aardvark'.)

I've also solved my problem. I'm working on Windows NT at work and there's a display setting specifically for icons. The NT default is to not show all colours - on changing this setting... hey presto... I get my orange icon! :)

Thanks, that's very good to know.

Goodness knows why it's there... when the machine is set to display 65 thou. colours!

So, tedster... do you like the icon?! :-)

I liked it a LOT. Choosing a close-up of the aardvark's eyes was very creative. Surprising how recognizable just that much of the cartoon is.

One thing you might consider is placing a 32x32 version in the .ico file along with the 16x16 image. Then if someone drags it to the desktop (hey, it can happen!) the icon doesn't pixelate.

Thanks for the praise and the tip.

As it happens, I did a close up of the eyes, as a reduced version of the aardvark itself just wasn't working. (It was more because I had to do it that way rather than any creativity on my part!)

It's a sort of bonus that the eyes seem to be almost looking at the URL when you see it in your browser after bookmarking it! ;)
