How can I auto-detect Browser settings?

Is there a good HTML code I can copy and paste so that all visitors to my site can see it the same as I see it?

I built it using MS Office on Windows ME.

It looks OK on my system - but looks different on most other PC's.

Welcome to Webmaster World, Cadet_Cheapstakes,

In a word, no. The nature of the web allows browsers some latitude in how they display your content. With work, you can come pretty close to the same look on most browsers and most operating systems -- but it's not nearly as simple as cut and paste code.

Did you use FrontPage to build your site?

Thanks for such a swift response!

I thought this would be another one of those wait 2 years and see sort of sites. Already I have 2 answers. My bookmark this page problem has been solved with ease!

I used (strangely) MS Office to build my site. On older browers my site appears to consist of half pages - perhaps I need to upsize everything by 30%?

I wish there was another way though as the site itself looks quite good (not all uploaded yet but I will give the address - ADULT SITE - when it is finished for posterity if I am allowed.

So there is no answer to this?

Hope it is not back to the ruddy drawing board!

Sorry, it is against our Terms of Service to promote the URL of your own site, or to give the address of any adult material.

MS Office (I assume you mean Word? or PowerPoint?) is not a good tool for writing cross-browser code. My best suggestion is to get a good reference book for HTML, and then use a validator on your current code (there's a good one on our sister site at: [searchengineworld.com...] ).

Once you know your code is valid, then check on different browsers and get into the fine points.

WOW! I had barely finished writing the response to the first question!

Message noted no Adult Material, and no promotion of your own site thank you.

Ok I will have to go to work on this big time by the looks of it!

The last time I viewed a page it was on an older PC and I was promted to download a one minute program to correct the error to see the page correctly.

Perhaps just recommending the best Browser setting is best. How do you find that out - my own browser setting appears to be the best.

By the way - is it really possible to be completely employed as a webmaster of your own site or am I just choking the chic....

Regards again

It is also difficult to optimize a page produced in MS Word (or Frontpage for that matter). You really should look into a different approack for designing your site

What about FLASH MACROMEDIA - would that be different?

Would that optimize my page layout?

Flash is flashy, but it is slow to load. wyswyg editors all add their own code making the page code more proprietory and bigger. If your were to take the meat(html code) out of your editor and into a text editor such as notepad you will have more flexability making code that will work more similar in different browsers hope that helps dave

Thank you yes - I am aware of HTML coding and Notepad - I can change basic coding in notepad to, for example, remove unwanted text from a banner add or to change its colour etc.

Would change the margins of the page to value = 0 help (including width etc). If so where about is this part of the HTML code (Body?)
