I never did update from IE 5, but it might be time. Should I go ahead and upgrade to 6, or get 5.5 while it's still available? What was the improvement of 5.5 over 5?

Didn't see too much difference, obviously 5.5 included the patch for 128-Bit SSL (5SP2) and the rather fun to play with zoom feature in it's CSS support.

We actually found this really useful for our intranet charting solution. We have a html (plug-in-less) version that uses VML (or images if not supported) and the CSS zooming made the chart zoomable. Well groovy.

Otherwise the differences weren't that amazing.

If you had an older version than 5.5, would you choose to upgrade to 5.5 or to 6.0?

To kick this up to the top... with regard to security, is it likely that 6.0 is more secure than 5.5, or that they've simply created new vulnerabilities and holes waiting to be found?

This is probably an obvious question:
I have IE5.0
I want to upgrade to the lates 5.x (not 6 yet).
Can I just go to the MS site and click on '5.5 update' or do I need to do it in steps e.g.
5.1 then 5.2 etc

You should be able to upgrade straight to 5.5. I don't know whether that upgrade would still be available on the MS website though... probably replaced it with version 6.

>>I don't know whether that upgrade would still be available on the MS website though...<<

Last time I looked, which was a week-plus ago, you could download 5.5 and, with 6.0, either download or order a CD.

The thought of downloading 20 megs or so over a dial-up connection (and then having to burn a backup CD) is one of the things that pushes me towards 6.0, but my philosophy has long been never to get version X.0 of anything. I'm guessing that 6.0 has taken care of known issues in v5.5, but I'm also thinking that MS, if they've added whistles and bells, may have created new problems... both related to security and otherwise.

Also, history suggests that there could be a big patch or v6.01 coming down the road any day now. Does anyone who's installed 6.0 have any observations on whether this looks like it's going to be necessary?
