Can anyone recommend good programs for me to try with good conversion rates. I notice the amazon.com thread a little further down, would it be wise to recommend books + software to my visitors from amazon.com.

just for your info, many sites get 0000000s of visitors but make NO money out of affiliate programs (not even PORN)
you have to aim at a specific community/niche/market first, and then try and drive revenue from that.
sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but thats the truth.
(however you are at the right place)

I myslef have thought of creating a site that would promote certain two teir "affiliate programs" in order to build my income from the work of others. Now don't get me wrong, man I love to work this stuff. At the same time if something bad should happen like some of my sites getting banned my income would all about stop. That is kinda nerve racking. My thinking would be to promote an affilaite / web marketing site and then help others to build their income (and mine).
However my main concern Dcallan is this, I have signed up many webmasters over the past year in many different programs. Any program that I promote produces for me so I figure it will be good for others as well. Of course the problem is that not all webmasters really want to make money online or are unwilling to truely work the program and do the learning need to start creating sales. Truth of the matter is that out of the thousands of people that join affiliate programs most never make one sale. It is a small fraction of people prob (less than 5%) that drive traffic for merchants. Please understand that these are rough numbers but the fact lies that few seam to be willing to learn what it takes to make a sale.
Possibly you could be suffering from this type of a situation yourself dcallan.
Good luck ;-)

Something's wrong with this picture ...
From my personal experience I have been able to generate 1 sale ( a membership ) per 100 hits, from any traffic. Its all in how you market your affiliate. You cant just stick banners on a page and expect sales, its takes lots of twinking and creative ideas. Sell your product, or affiliates product, from your site. Figure out where the majority of people are coming into your site from, and start the sell there. Make it an informative, attractive, intreging journey from their entry till you send them to your sponser.
