Where can I get a list of the zip codes where offline advertising for an online enterprise should bring the best results?

Since your question is somewhat broad, I will give you a broad answer. If you visit the Census Bureau [census.gov], they provide free demographic and economic census data that you can crunch by zip code. Who are you trying to target your product or services to?

What you're describing is GeoDemographics [hsb.baylor.edu], and is something that can only be established once you have a firm grasp on the exact demographics of your ideal customer.

Once you know this, there are any number of professional Direct Marketing firms that can help you target your mailings by geographic area.

One word of advice though, lists targeted by interest will always yield greater results than those targeted by geography alone.

Broadly, to upscale web surfers.

I wasn't thinking so much about direct mailings. I was thinking about local newspaper advertising.

Thanks for the replies.

Census Bureau has a section called American FactFinder [factfinder.census.gov] that will slice basic demographic data by State or County level. A starting point would be to look at Household Income (like single head of households with no children). Or areas with professional/high-tech occupation? Once you have an idea of what area to target, a list of local newspapers by state can be found at NewspaperLinks [newspaperlinks.com].

Lets say I have a hot widget that is popular among California college students. I can slice the data by City for "Population 18 to 24 years--Percent enrolled in college or graduate school". Find out what colleges are in those cities and advertise in their school paper.
