Putting price on your website

Anyone tried it for affiliate sales?

Has anyone tried putting a price for an affiliate product you are promoting on your website?

After going into your sales pitch say something like, "xyz company has the low price of "X" dollars for this shiny widget (click here).

Do you think this would backfire and drive cutomers away?

Any thoughts?

Customers like it just fine, because it helps them to feel informed and in control of their shopping experience. That assumes you have positive, informative sales copy to go with it.

One advantage of not mentioning price, and having a "click here to learn more" style of bridge to the merchant , is that it's easier to keep your pages up to date.

The more information you give a customer the more likely they are to take the next step towards purchasing the product. I also think that giving the price up-front makes it easier for a customer to make a decision. I get very frustrated if I have to keep clicking to find out how much I'm going to have to spend. As buckworks said, though, you'll have to make sure your prices are up to date.

Are your replies based on personal thoughts?

Or has anyone actually put this theory into practice
and reviewed the results both with and without price posting?

My comments were based on my own experience.

I avoid mentioning prices on my own affiliate pages for maintenance reasons, but the times I have mentioned prices I have never noticed any negative effects on my own bottom line.

One situation where I do try to mention price is placing ads in pay-per-click contexts. Example: Overture listings, Google Adwords. If the price scares them off it's better that happens before I pay for the clickthrough!
