I think people get used to the status quo and get attracted by that which is out of the ordinary.
I think this is kind of an old idea but anybody designed a banner with just the company name or URL? Successful?

Banners? Are those still around? A year or two ago we had some good click through rates with some corny ads that look like buttons. You know those banners that look like drop down menus etc... I bet a good one would be 'click here to keep you computer from exploding' with a timer or something. I've always been amazed at how unknowledgeable the average web user is. I just know you have to tell people to click on your banner 'click here!'
I'll also bet those punch the monkey ads had great click through rates.

banners in the form of a TEXT AD work! They also load faster.

"If this banner is flashing, you have won a prize" I bet such banner ads had good CTR too.
JamesR, you can probably try -
"If you click on this banner, I will pay you.. Honest!"

Click-through rates are only part of what matters. The bigger question is how well the traffic converts to sales once they've clicked through.
How many people here can even remember what punch-the-monkey was promoting? I can't.

That is what I am thinking along with url branding power.
