Is your site a general interest site and you are trying to sell a product that relates to your site, or is it a site about a specific product and the popup reinforces the product that your site is about? The best method to acheive sales is to have products that relate to your site's content. It's difficult to have someone request a car quote when they are on a site about household pets.
As a general rule of thumb you want your site to have as much info as possible about the product(s) and inlcude a "click here to buy" link on each page so it is easy for your visitors to buy if they are interested.
Please include as much general info as possible (without product/brand specifics) so we can try to help.
It was predictable really, because the advertising was kind of a pyramid scheme that no-one actually controlled. Meanwhile, advertising space was the classic case where supply far exceeded demand and just kept growing.
There is still a market for advertising, but to tap it you need to provide proven quality. What is your circulation? What are your audience demographics? In an industry where most companies see a conversion rate of less than 2 percent, how do you ensure (and prove) that you offer your advertisers a higher ROI - one they'll be willing to pay more for?
It's still about bottom-lines you see. If every other player in town offers them 2 percent conversions, and you can offer 4 percent, they'll certainly be willing to pay almost double. If you're smart and offer them double the value, for only 150 percent of the cost, then both sides benefit and you have a true win-win scenario.
ROI is the key. That you offer advertising puts you in a league of millions - the value you offer is the differentiating factor you need.
