My main site has been on the go since 1999 and now serves about 45000 pages per month. I have experimented with various ad serving companies like value click and trade doubler but have never had a great deal of success with this form of advertising. To be honest I know my site will never exactly be something I can make a living from it, it is more or less a hobby, but an expensive hobby at that. What I was considering was selling the ad space myself but aiming my ad space more towards the bottom end of the advertising market, sites similar to my self with a very small marketing budget who are very often put off by the minimum spend that is required by the majority of online advertising sources. What I wish to do is sell the adverts off at say for example £3 CPM with minimum spend of £6. My average click through just now is 3.5% so if you conceder the potential clicks they will receive for their money the initial price doesn’t sound so bad. This is the sort of thing that small personal type pages would perhaps be interested in simply because they can experiment with their first form of internet advertising. My aim in all of this is to more or less break even and stop running at a loss.

That would probably attract some interest. Targeted sites bring the right kind of traffic and you could advertise your program with that in mind.

To look at it from the potential advertisers point of view...
Do you feel they would benefit from this type of advertising?

sounds a lot like the advertising that kuro5hin.org recently started running. You might check out their implementation for some ideas.
