Hi,

As part of a change to my site, ive removed all "above the fold" 468 banners, greatly lightening the code on each page

as an alternative source of revenue, i remember a program that spawns a pop upon the user leaving the site.

I also remember a short time ago all the furore with Google and pop-ups, with some people under the belief that google was responsible for some pop ups. This was the time when that "scumware" came to the surface

Anyway, the program I mention has managed to acquire a PR0 on the google toolbar, and im thinking along the lines of because of the nature of the program and past google problems.

In light of this, what is your opinion as to whether I should sign up for the program?

I need some sort of revenue, and last time i studied it the rate was $5 per 1000 visitors, which Id be happy with

I just ask in respect to PR0's and whether my site could acquire a PR0 for running the program

and as a quick question to GG, if in fact google is penalising such advertising programs, purely because they spawn when people leave the site and not within the timespan of the user viewing their own site :)

by the way, if anyone uses the program i wouldnt mind a few opinions on them. since i dont wanna blatantly post their URL.... its ex*tf**l :)

I don't think you're likely to get an answer on 3rd party exit pops and their effects on google PR.

However, I tend to think that independent sites that run certain brands of 3rd party exit pops tend to fall into, ummmm, the 'revenue harvester' class. While this is purely speculative as to the current design of any engine, I could make a good case that looking for certain tell-tale signs of aggressive ad techniques has a rightful place in determining relevance.

If the question is: Is replacing top banners with pop-ups viable from the revenue standpoint?

I think that is a great question but it will get an it depends answer.

Let me explain. A good practice is to only serve one pop-up per session or visit. If your average visitor views 4 pages then the revenue for the pop-up must support what you were getting from 4 banners.

The next question is how many of your banners are really revenue producing. Lots of sites are only selling about 25% of their banner inventory.

I'm from the "no free lunch" school so I don't see getting rid of them as a positive. TV, radio, magazines and newspapers don't have all the breast-beating about advertising that web site owners do.

However there are sites where ads do get in the way. I tell my clients to put their pages on panels clearly separating content from ads.

I am also partial to a single 125x125 banner in the lower right hand position of the viewable (or above the fold) page. Some sites find that this is clicked 25%-30% more often than top banners.

Good call, the 3rd party I was with before didnt have technology to limit 1 pop per session.

The 468x60 banners were getting about 6000 impressions, half were default inventory, the other R-O-N. I was lucky to make $2 a day

On the other hand, the 3rd party above offers $3 per 1000 visitors exiting your site. RC, I can understand your "revenue harvester" perspective, but the reason to remove the 468x80 was because they were on every page and no doubt more annoying that having 1 pop up when leaving the site.

On top of this, I was running pop ups with Burst!, ie more than 1 pop per person

I dont want to annoy my users, but at the same time, $ is needed for the server. Im not intending to make a fast buck, just a solid revenue so I can spend more time working on the site!

The Google PR0 thing I raised due to the fact that the pops open when people leave the site, i.e. outwith my domain, therefore thought it may be an ethical issue, particularly with google since the banner server in question has a PR0 site

But this is to keep the site going, not to make afast buck :)

That depends on the 3rd party that's serving the exit pop. The pay rate can be a tip-off as to whether they are good or bad for your site.

>tip off

good call

seriously, im paranoid about being penalised for the ads ive shown after the "bad neighbourhoods" threads on top of the google stance on pop unders/ups

Im just looking to find a way to let the site tick over nicely while Im not around without having to face a huge bill.....

Im going to have to buy a marketing cap to wear when I make future content sites...

unless someone has suggestions, the site is in profile, sticky box empty and waiting :)
