CPC, CPM, or Monthly Fee

Which do you prefer for purchasing advertising on a site

Well the title says it all. I'm trying to get some ideas of which way I should advertise on my site. Should I do a CPC, CPM or Monthly Fee?

Also, when a site says they get just over 4 million hits a month does that mean HITS or visitors?

Looking at the very same thing myself atm. As I have the capcity for all, I think I am going to end up offering all options to the advertisers. I think it depends on the advertiser as some are looking for a very specific ROI which are more suited to CPC, and others would rather be able to clearly define thier bottom line costs in which case a monthly or CPM based system might be better.

The definition of hits seems to be a bit of a grey area, but I don't know why. To me hits is the total number of HTTP requests served, pageviews is the total number of pages viewed as a whole (usually consists of serveral hits), visitors represent a seperate connection bassed on session and/or IP and includes repeat visits, and finally unique visitors are the same as visitors but does not include repeat visitors. What I've found is that a lot of people seem to refer to hits as pageviews, but best ask them for clarification is unsure.

After having read some other posts, I would actually like some advise as to wether offering CPM based advertising is worth it. Sounds like it is a dying format, so to reduce advertising option clutter on my site I would rather it not be there if not used.

I've never had any luck getting anyone to pay CPM for advertising on my website for the 5 years that I've had it, but I'm pulling in a couple thousand a month charging $200 a month for a banner with a minimum guranteed number of views. It's worked out well and companies seem more comfortable with it.

I also heavily use CPC advertising. I wouldn't pick just one if you are planning on offering multiple programs. IE monthly for banner(s), CPC for targeted links/ads, etc.
