About five months ago, word spread that Google was launching an affiliate program.
It was in Beta then and affiliates could promote the program by invitation only.
Anybody ever hear more about it?

Do you mean a program of their own, where they would pay for new advertisers, or a CJ-like network that they would manage?

There is a "Google Referral Program", and it looks like it is still invitation only. There is a $20 referral fee for each advertiser or publisher you refer.
