A client of mine is keen on a banner ad campaign.

He needs to be told about how they work. CTRs, placements etc. Any real life experience of getting conversions from Banner Ads?

I would say that it depends on what you're selling. Just like the yellow pages, some industries live and die by their yellow pages ad and some don't get anything and/or don't need one.

A banner ad only works when the price of the promo product, and the image of the promo product, is on the banner, and that price is rock bottom. That will encourage clicking. Otherwise, banner ads are just pretty pictures decorating a page.

You have to pitch a product, unless the type of site is very unusual, and will peak the interest of the visitor.

For retail products or wholesale products, you must have have a discounted sale item on the banner, for maximum CTR. An excellent banner, with price, can have a CTR of as high as 10% of impressions. While banners without a discount price many only have .01% or less.

Have them modelled by an attractive female in a bikini. You will get a good CTR to the site, whether you can then close the sale is another issue.
