Hi

I was looking at movabletype and wordpress, both are cms/blogging tools. Are these scripts advisable when creating a website to promote/ write reviews about products? When I looked at the page source, there was not meta tags, etc. Should they be used for SEOs or should these scripts just be treated as a blog and something secondary to the main site?

Hi Pip,

Blogging can be a useful way to generate affiliate revenues yes, but it really depends on your dedication.

The main problem with blogs right now is that everybody is doing them. About a year ago they started becomming popular among affiliate marketers, and then everybody jumped on board, so the markets are oversaturated.

But if you can write really good content, then yes it can work out extremely well for you.

The meta tag problem you mentioned is because of the software. Try looking at Nucleus, it's a free blog script that allows you to completely customize all html code on all pages of the blog. Takes a while to setup and configure properly, but it works wonders.

Wordpress works really well and is really customizable with themes. It is good for managing static pages for a small site as well.

Wordpress creates decent code too, it validates, which is something other CMS's miss out on at times. In my opinion a blog is as useful as any other tool in your arsenal, it just depends how you use it. If you have content, and you presell right, and you have the right products, I don't think it matters how that content is presented too much, as long as it's clearly laid out and you have it on your own domain name and not somewhere like blogger.com.

Anyway, these blogging systems are getting more and more like article creation system each day, there's not much difference between using them or coding something yourself at times.
