I see a lot of posts that recommend building small sites around tight niches.
Some people even mention building hundreds of these.

With this technique how do you manage to get inbound links?
Do you get links the normal way or just interlink between your own sites with some other external links tossed in to mix it up?

Do you have separate domains for each site or do subdomains work just as well?

Sites like these will not get much traffic through organic SERPS. Therefore the value of inbound links would be limited unless they provide actual traffic rather than just PR. These sites mainly use mailing list, PPC and affiliate for generating traffic. Therefore, most of the links will come from affiliates.
