I ask because this is NOT something I do myself, but I have seen people posting on the Amazon Associates discussion boards about their campaigns that involve doing exactly what you describe. So I think it is techically possible, because the discussions I've seen are mostly about the difficulty of making money from such an approach.
My guess is that you aren't using the right link format. Amazon gives Associates several different link formats, each of which has to be set up following their instructions. You may just need to experiment. Alternatively, post the link you've been trying to use in the Help section of the boards, and you will likely get some helpful comments...
What I already did is create the text links to specific product pages I normally use on my web site. These are plain text links and work well on the web site, but they don't work (redirect to the Amazon main page) if you directly paste it to the browser or click on the adwords ad using that link. It must be checking the referrer, and accepting only valid web site referrals. Anyway, as I said I will try some other ways and post what I find out, thanks.
