Just wondering how many sites you own, and if you could expand on wether they're full fledged sites, mini sites, whatever-classification-you-assign, or whatever - no details need to be included, just trying to get a sense of what's being done out there, and what I can hope to achieve.
Also how long has it taken you to get to the point you are, and what kind of growth are you expecting for this year?
As for me, I own 3-4 sites - 2 big sites, 2 datafeed sites (one of them's kinda dead in the water).Started about a year ago, but only for real about 6 months ago. My goal is to try and double or triple my revenue for this year, which if you follow my $100/day thread, it means I want to be making $6k t0 $10k a month by year's end.
Nice goals Gopi, gym and health are very important.
Here are my goals at least for the next 3 months.
- Learn SEO (I am getting there)
- Apply SEO knowledge in building 10-30 page websites
- Work on a couple projects with friends that I have never met in 3rd world countries, and together create some income.
- Have at least 10 sites ready to go (on page factors) in 3 months
- By the time summer hits, that should be way more, and ready to get the heck outta the sandbox
- Try different things when creating these sites. Examples would be to get links fast and see how that effects things. Try getting in the top for semi competitive phrases, and for non competitive phrases.
- Diversify by having sites on many different topics. Hey, if you use enough techniques and niches, you will have a steady income.
All the Best,
C.K.
Goals...
Pass 100 domains by making more affiliate sites and more content sites. Then promote them more and keep working on them. I think 100 sites is more than enough to have to make a living!
If I had to pin a strategy down.
Simple:
Trade my shotgun which I use to hunt squirels for a few high powered rifles that I can use against elephant like targets.
For me, this years big goal is to bring in a proper forecasting system into the picture - predictable and managable growth.
I'm working as a Webmaster/SEO for a company where I'm managing 200 sites, 80 of which are full-blown store fronts. Of the remaining 120, about 30 are utility sites used to manage the others, 25 or so are dead sites, and the remainder are a combination of information sites or serve a very specific purpose.
In my last SEO job (mid 2004) I was only managing 2 sites, but each was getting over 50,000 uniques/day and was a huge cash cow for the company that hired me.
I have setup serveral sites for friends, freelance jobs, and other people as well, but I don't actively monitor their progress unless I'm asked to.
Personally I only own one domain right now. Last year I owned about 20 that functioned in various roles but I sold them off after they reached a certain point because they were getting harder to manage.
Over the next 12 months I have two really big personal projects, both of which focus on information/service rather than direct ecommerce. I can't really go into any deeper detail though...
My goal for Dec 05 is to quit working full time as an SEO while generating enough money from these two projects to maintain my current standard of living - while seo and internet marketing are my passion, I have a daughter that will be born in May and will have to make certain sacrifices if I want to be the father that I want to be.
52 are active projects
6 are due to launch Q1
2-3 are to support new printed item launch Q3
My goal (general) is to convert new information (e.g., SEO, AdSense, Affiliate developments) into rapid decision-making, avoid any downtime with "analysis paralysis" and always think about the true opportunity costs by avoiding unprofitable downtime on projects without potential to create conversion.
I just registered here today, so I wanted to thank the community for this interesting support base.
Good luck to everyone.
what exactly is a datafeed site?
You make the site and get all the 'content' from one file.
Here's an example...
offerings_id producttitle productdescription1 smimage smimagewidth smimageheight stdimage stdimagewidth stdimageheight segmentname categorytitle grouptitle

First part is the info about each table. Then below it is the info, one product per line. You use a program to make the files.
I think a lot of people (myself included) are used to just throwing up domains and linking to them and hoping to make a few bucks just by volume.
I took a pretty big hit in traffic late December and I'm pretty sure it was some kind of dupe filter.
So in addition to the "throw up a 3000 page datafeed site in an hour" methodology I am also working on some carefully crafted, hand written pages. It will be interesting to see the results.
The number of sites isn't the only important number. Is someone that has 100 domains and making $1000/month that successful?
That's not very good. If all 100 sites are working properly and you actually have the time to dedicate to getting them work, then you could easily generate way more than $1000/month.
I disagree. Lots of sites making a little can be the tonic.
Given how new I am with your apparent area of expertise, can you please, please elaborate on what you use to get to that $1000 per month? Parked domains (DomainHop, AdSense parked?), or AdSense content, other?
It's funny how people define successful. For some affiliates $1,000 is nothing for others it's heaven.
Again I will post the bible of affiliate marketing

The way I made it to $1000 per month was to build a typeB site that poeple and directories willingly linked to and then I linked to a typeA site to pass the PR down to it.
Remember that domains are disposable commodities. Build a Type A site around a program and if it doesn't work try another angle or a tighter niche. Understand what the competition is for your target market. The goal is to find products that have high demand, good conversions and low competition.
It's all sounds so simple doesn't it? :)
I disagree. Lots of sites making a little can be the tonic.
However there are many affiliates that keep putting up the same site 100 times. I think an era is coming when quality does matter and is rewarded. It's not that difficult for the average joe to create a datafeed site, or some kind of Amazon Web Services site.
In the Adwords world there are advertisers that use the dynamic keyword insertion tool to create 1000's of crappy adwords ads that read like

SEO is key because with content sites usually the margins are so tight you can't afford to advertise that much. On affiliate sites, if you do a lot of hard work and research or get damned lucky, you can hit the jackpot. I'm sure there are people in here with affiliate sites making $5,000+ per day. I could see how with 10 to 20 (maybe even less?) good affiliate programs that is possible.
I guess the main thing is diversity, like in anything, helps. Don't create 20 sites on a small niche; create 20 sites about 20 small niches. Don't do everything the same from site to site; it can end up killing you in one google update. Try different things, but don't interlink unless you can risk losing all profit. When I enter into a new niche I do about 20-40 hours of research and then set some goals and realistic expectations. I usually don't bother getting into a niche unless it can make at least $20/day.
The key here is experimentation, you'll never know unless you try. I started out with $2,000 a several months back and have grown that tremendously where I can now experiment with PPC on a much larger scale.
My personal goals are to double profits every few months, so far this month I've quadrupled daily earnings over December, hopefully things pan out on some of my bigger projects, but currently I am trying to recover from the AdWords new policies. I've never really dealt with straight up landing pages, so we shall see how all of this pans out.
I would say right now is a great time to get into affiliate marketing, a lot of stuff has recently changed creating a whole new ballgame for some.
Good luck and don't be afraid, especially not afraid to lose a little but of money at first.
Regarding diversity, I do actually create websites, utilizing affiliate programs and AdSense, but I just looked at my inventory and decided to do something with some of the dormant domains.
I'd like to give you an example. I just added 109 domains to DomainHop and asked them to optimize them for me (given time constraints - I thought I could go back to them later and override, if not "optimized" enough. All 109 names are like this one: BahamasQ.com (like for "quest"[smilestopper]) - all are travel destinations - ParisQ, BermudaQ, etc.
I'd welcome any comments on the quality of what I believe to be good search-related topics, and whether you folks think that using DomainHop was a pro or con... or other suggestions? I'm wide open!
Thanks again all.
