huge content portal owners, how was the growth?

Does anyone on here own a huge content portal? Meaning the likes of msn (albiet a few times smaller, but you get teh picture)..?

If so, how was your growth and is it still possible to compete with the 'big boys' on broad topics (but then again there are narrow topics covered in the general categories)? My feeling is to start with a niche as its a big job to keep up with many topics, especially when started with 1 person.

One of my sites is a large portal but knowhere near the traffic level of MSN, etc. If you are good at writing good quality content then there is always room for you, even if you are a one man band. Basically start of small and grow. Remember, many seeds have grown into huge oak trees :)
