We have a sports site (US sports, European soccer, tennis ...) with stats, news and analysis and approximately 1000 visitors per day and 65,000 page views per month. Google PR 6. Top 10 Google and Yahoo listing for our phrase - very commercial and competitive keywords. We currently have no advertising on our site. So far that was our policy.

Now, I have some offers, exactly a text link with 15-20 words.

How much to charge this link or similar banner offers. Or maybe, we must join some ad network program.
Please help? We need the right directions!

Thanks!

This is such a hard question, but I think I've figured out how to set them. I'm going to start selling ad space on my own site in 2005, and I've figured out an easy way to set my rates: I'm currently running Fastclick ads, so when I offer ad rates, I'm going to set the price for double what I can get with my Fastclick ads because, obviously, I'd have to remove my Fastclick ads to run the buyer's ads. Since you don't currently have banners, I'm not sure how you'd gauge your rates, sorry, but I know this is one of the biggest questions all webmasters have.

But from what I've read, more experienced webmasters usually provide this answer: Find out what your competitors, those at your level, are charging, and do likewise.

"We are unable to approve your site as a publisher on our network at this time" said peoples from Fastclick after my "Sign in" request.
I donít know why, but I know, Fastclick so far - nothing.

I don't remember, but I think Fastclick requires uniques about 5,000/month to get accepted. If that's the case (I don't really remember, as I said), but you might want to fudge your numbers. I did when I signed on. Heh heh. Now I have more than enough uniques, but back then I didn't. Haha.

Wait! We have 30,000 unique visits per month. But, they asked me in "Sign in" for page views on daily basis. I wrote 2,000.

So, tell me webmastertexas, for 15-20 words link offer, your opinion! Imagine that for your site and three month of the ad campaign!

Sorry, I meant, 5,000 a DAY. Not month. :)

Good question. But before I answer, keep in mind that I plan to sell ad space for my site in 2005, which means I expect my site's numbers to climb well past the half a million page view/month mark by that time. When I reach that destination, I would probably charge around $50/month for a brief 15-20 word link to be placed at the top, just under my main banner. After all, it doesn't take a lot of space, and I would charge more for banners. I would also put it on ALL of my original content pages, which comes out to about 1,200 pages, all with original content.

15-20 word link on 1,200 pages with a million page view/month for $50?

Only $50/month?

How much you can earn with Fastclick now?

Look at some of the ad services that broker text links for various sites. Depending on the audience and page views, most sites I've seen are in the 30-$100 month range. Certain money topics like health, gambling, adult, debt, loans etc. command more.

WEll they're just a line of text. Those, on a page with original content (i.e. 800-1000 words) is not exactly what I'd call major advertising. I doubt anyone would pay you more than $50/month unless you're getting massive numbers.

By 2005 we expect to make around $1200 just from our Fastclick banner ads (as our numbers jump from month to month, we're making over $200 more each month). Notice I said BANNERS. But for a line of text, I wouldn't charge that much. For a banner, especially the one at the very top of the page? You're definitely going to have to pay us more than what our Fastclick ads would make us.

But for a tiny line of text? $50 a month is about right.

There'll most likely be a higher CTR with text ads though. When I had banners I was getting something like 0.02%. Can't tell you about Adsense (due to TOS) but I'm doing affiliate text ads now and it's about 3%. If your advertisers are getting more value then you should charge them more, however insignificant the text looks.

Hi webmastertexas,

We've sold text links on our sites before without a broker. Usually, I figured the CPM of the page from adsense and aff links and doubled it. Then quoted based on that -- same as you. It helps to establish a ctr by giving a free trial to potential advertiser (a day for a high traffic site).

Side note:
I'm looking to invest some ad $$$ in text ads to drive traffic. Can you post or sticky your site theme or some of the brokers?

We do niche movie stuff. Asian films, mostly. But also a lot of indies and non-mainstream stuff. Our motto is: "If Roger Ebert doesn't review it, we will." :)
