since this is a big part of SEO, especially for google, I'm just curious as to how you manage to get links.
some things that've come to my mind:
crawlable/SE-friendly directories- but it's hard to say how easy it'll be to get into these things, especially if you run a "type b" affiliate site...
then there are link exchanges, but to some extent, you want to keep your url private (if you send it out to the wrong person, they may try to snatch your ideas..)
then there's buying links, but I can't imagine this is worth it in terms of getting a decent ROI...
Affiliate sites can build links the same way as any other site, assuming they have some type of content (and possibly even if it doesn't, depending on the industry). Of course, some places (dmoz and the like) won't accept affiliate sites, so you move on and build links in the ways you can.

Link Buying Theory
1. Buy inbound link(s) from high PR website
2. Keep buying links until you get to at least a PR5 or 6
3. Once PR spreads through site you will attract 'mealy mouth PR hunters' and trade links with them to attempt to generate 'natural' PR.
4. PR at this point will be high enough for frequent/deep crawls
4b. Go to forum3 post/gripe/rant about sandboxing/quarantine/lag time of your site, because you will have triggered it with steps 1-3
The ROI comes from not using/wasting your time doing your own link hunting, but in making yourself an attractive link partner for those who do.
SEO's have known for at least a year that buying a few high PR links won't get you anywhere. It's about anchor text from unique domains. If you don't think it works, search any term that will net $10k plus per motnh in aff earnings and at least 1 out of the top 10 will be link buyers.
If you are just starting out and are a little green to SEO and aff programs, simple link exchange will probably suffice for non competetive areas. Not to say that recips ,can't work for major terms, but they will generally need to be supplemented with some "one way" links.
Most of the bigger players have many ways to get links, including through their own sites. This type of approach, as well as most aggressive tactics, take a great deal of time and money, or, in some cases, just SEO knowledge.

Some good content pages or sites in your network can make an easier focus for cultivating links, and also for picking up links "from the wild". The PR gains from that can then be funneled through the rest of your network. For an affiliate marketer, content is more servant than king!
Same here .. a bit of slickness with your domain name and a decent looking site helps too.
We've been regularly scoring links from sources like eWeek, manufacturers and other sites which err .... like to links to authority sites.
Unfortunately, the new backlinks update has caused us to trip a filter somewhere and all our ranked terms have moved from page 1 to page 2 and 3. So... its not just about inbound links, *lots of other factors* at play.
