Specific niche vs general niche website?

Is it better to start off a very specific aff. site instead of more general

In the past 6 months I got into the whole online ppc thing and have released a few LARGE content sites. One of them profits nicely, the rest are still doing horrible. The forums here have been very helpful and I've always found answers to whatever I was looking for. But here is a question that I am still struggling with:

I've decided to invest my next incoming check to starting an aff. website dedicated to a relatively competative niche with high commissions. The thing is that I haven't narrowed my niche yet. For example, should I make the website exclusively dedicated to "service x" or "service y"?
Or should I make a general website for "services a-z".

I am also open to suggestions about marketing. In my case, where would be a good place to put money into - PFI Directories, PPC, Adsense?

I think those are distinct strategies.

Personally, I'm a technical guy, not a copywriter/marketing, so I found it hard going all the way and competing for PRoduct X, where X is a high payout/high competition. I found it a million times easier simultanously (pretty much at the same effort) promote products a-z, where a-z include high and low payout, high and low competition products. This is mostly because of my technical know-how where I can reduce the effort require to promote many items simultaneously.

Writers and hardcore SEOers may be more comfortable promoting a single item to high degree.

I wouldnt promote just one very specific item. Look for things that compliment eachother and offer them. Thats the way I do it, at least.

That's what I thought in the first place. I can kind of compare the quality/price of many different products as an 'unbiased' reviewer...
