Directory Style sites

are they worth anything?

I'm thinking about creating a directory style site for widget/niche related resources. This would be akin to yahoo's directory listings.i.e. several categories, then listings inside them.

Is there any money to be made in this type of venture? I'm almost not even interested in making money - but mostly just to try and compile what I would hope to be the 'most extensive' widget/niche resources listings available on the net. The site would only be useful if it were to be linked from somewhere.

How hard is a site for this to be spidered and ranked high? since there wouldn't be much content besides links and short descriptions.

well, like I said, is there any way to capitalize in directory style listings, _without_ charging sites to be listed?

Requiring people who want links in your directory to link back to you will get you page rank, and I've clicked on enough directories when attempting to find information to know some of them rank well in the search engines.

You could probably make some dollars advertising with Adsense, but I wouldn't hold my breath for a lot of affiliate sales on the traffic from something like that. Could be wrong, though.;)
