Q: Most Effective Ads for Online Game Site?

Of the kind of Neopets or PetCube.

I was wondering, what could be the best type of advertising for a Online Game Site, of the type of Neopets (http://www.neopets.com/) or PetCube (http://www.petcube.com/).

By best advertising I mean the type, position, occurence of ads to maximize click-throughs and leads.

The problem is that there will probably more returning visitors than new visitors (bad thing I guess) but a lot of page views.

Anyone have experiences with those sites?

A friend of mine used to have a site like this, and i remember him talking about doing some sort of promotion where the user could order tshirts, mugs, etc that had a picture of the user's pet on it. That might be something to consider.
