lyrics sites.

I just went to one looking for a country song lyrics, and on the left side, posters of the singer by allPosters, and on the right, cds from amazon.

sounds like a great , targetted way to make money!...

why am i posting this? maybe someone who's new might want to pick up this idea.

probably very competitive market though, tons of lyrics sites out there.

lyric sites frequently run into legal trouble due to copyright/trademark issues.

I'd reckon there's the potential for that.

But so do pharma, online gambling and pr0n. Hasn't stopped them by much (well, some concerted effort in pharma).

I never had a problem finding lyrics for any song I've looked up on google, so my guess is this type of site will still be there. Just keep it under the radar and don't become too big :)

Now that I think I bit more into it, what if the lyrics are submitted by users? That would exonerate the site from publishing copyrighted material.

Anyway.

That should also tell you that there are tons of lyric sites so you will have some competition.

This is a very old idea. I would look for a legal site to promote instead.

Sites based on copyright violations are breaking the terms of service of most legitimate affiliate programs (meaning you may never get paid), plus they have a very good chance of being shut down by their ISP's. Even if you don't get sued outright, be prepared to receive some threatening letters from lawyers.

regardless of legal issues, I would not get your hopes up too high for making big dough on a lyrics site :)

ehhh..

non legal issues aside, I am a firm believer that even if there's a ton of lyrics sites , decent money can be made. ASsuming you have a decent/good 'product', it all depends on how well they're marketed, advertised or partnered.

Like they say, the devil is in the details. I wonder if there's anyone reading these forums who do indeed run a lyrics site :)

Anyone?

Geesh, waddya need, a hammer over the head :)

Lyrics traffic is worthless. Take a look at the top bid on adwords....oops not ONE site is bidding on lyrics.

Unless one posts one's lyrics on his/her site and names it well. :)

Ah-Ha! (said in my best Eddie Murphy voice)

Also, consider this: Many people looking for lyrics already have the song.

I should correct myself - the legal issues on such a website can be enormous.I did some research, and the biggest two sites have been shut down or are limping away.

Anyway, had this been a really good idea I wouldn't have posted it ;)

Back to working on my main site.

I run some lyric sites. We only use public domain lyrics and frankly it's a public service, doesn't generate much income.

One of my sites has a lyrics section, public domain stuff. It generates a small amount of traffic but not anything significant. It's mostly filler for the site.

What do you consider to be public domain? Greensleeves? Camptown racetrack? National anthems?

In general it's works produced before 1920. That gives you a safe buffer.
