I'm considering starting up my own site, one that would require advertising. Obviously it's going to take awhile for the site to build traffic, but I feel confident that it will generate a lot.

Since I'm not exactly sitting on bundles of cash, I'll need the site to bring in revenue. My thought was to get advertisers to run banner ads. But I would think most advertisers would want traffic numbers before they commit.

Any ideas as to how I might entice advertisers. Or, for that matter, any other ideas at all?

Thanks for any replies.

Banners aren't big earners these days. If you were to offer banners then you would need to guarantee traffic to your site, so you had something to "sell" to the banner advertiser. One way to guarantee traffic is running PPC advertising for the period until you get the free traffic up to reasonable levels.

Obviously, in view of your financial situation, such a PPC campaign would need to be carefully crafted so that the cost of the campaign didn't exceed the banner ad revenues. You would probably need to select highly targeted keyword phrases to achieve that - i.e. four+ word phrases. Well selected longer keyword phrases result in relatively low traffic compared to say a two word keyword phrase but very significantly greater conversion rates (i.e. sales - either by you or your banner ad clients).

Make no mistake, what I have proposed above is going to take a lot of smart work.

Alternatively, try Google Adsense - all you need to do is just display their advertisements - no thinking or hard work required. :)
