I thought this Business 2.0 article on Matt Drudge's DrudgeReport.com [business2.com] was pretty interesting. They estimate that his two-person operation brings in $800,000 a year from advertising sales.

Its nice to see a content site making money without charging fees or flooding it with ads.

Well, I get one and sometimes two popups when I go there, so that's close to flooding.

Great story, though. Essentially a one-page site with probably little if any search engine traffic. It survives 100% on brand awareness.
