Hello WebmasterWorld!
Most recently I have been looking to get into the affiliate scene much more deeper than I am in it now. The affiliates I'm currently with I have relationships with the companies, I can pick up the phone and they will know who I am. Or I went with a particular affiliate because a friend/buddy uses them and I was for certain they were a sure fire company.

My question to you guys and girls is how many affiliates have you gone with, have you been burned from the first paycheck or somewhere down the line? If these things have happened to you what made you wiser or what methods of Research do you partake in before integrating affiliate programs into your site. There are enough frauds out there, whats the best way to protect yourself, I say its researching the company. But what methods should be taken in researching or choosing your affiliate program?

It's often a realization that you're doing a lot of work for little money. Then you start to dig into the reasons why and find "little things" like shortened cookies, a new toll-free phone number plastered across the site, or opt-out marketing newsletters for those customers that you've referred.

some past goodies:

>>whats the best way to protect yourself,

Remember thats things aren't static. Once you are working with a few merchants on a few sites it gets time consuming keeping up to date.

You need to know a merchant hasn't changed the site structure so that links no longer work or images have moved.

You need to keep in contact to make sure you know when a company has stopped servicing their program even if the stats keep going up.

Lately merchants are getting fussy about how you promote them, you need to keep on top of this too.

It would be easy to grow to quickly in the aff game, make sure you (or your colleagues) are able to keep on top of every merchant you work with and every website you promote them on.
