Being newto the online advertising situation, I am considering using a banner ad server such as Burst or Fastclick, In doing some reading I keep coming across the words "default ads". I understand that these are unsold ads, and that percentage on these has been increasing, however I also see things such as selling of default ads or being charged for them? Need some advice and explanation here. Have looked through the older posts but didn't find an explanation anywhere. Sorry if I haven't made myself clear in the post....ts just so confusing right now.

If I was brand new to advertising on the internet I would start with overture and then use google adwords.

I think adwords is better and converts better - at least for me, but overture is easier to use for the novice. Both are highly targeted and a much better investment than banner ads.

Question is actually the other way, sorry I didn't make that clear, where I am publishing ads, not buying ad space.

Thanks

Much depends on the type of site, user demographics, and the amount of traffic. For many sites, it's not worth it.

If cost is an issue, orbitcycle is a very stable and affordable platform.

True -- showing ads thru Fastclick for .65/1000 imps or (.00065 each)is a pretty lame revenue source unless you have lots of traffic. An alternative is to show PPC ads through one of the 3rd party feed sites. The code is very customizable and can fit any space etc... As with any advertising it really depends on the niche, whether you can generate any revenue from PPC either. Some ppc terms don't pay squat.

W/o knowing your site/traffic/deomgraphics it is hard to say.

I know some large content sites that make their hosting fees showing banner ads. But that is about it. Nobody is getting rich off them.

Maybe not getting rich, but certainly more than hosting fees. I happen to know someone very well that has a content site that makes over a grand a month off banners.....

Check into tribalfusion and selling banners yourself...

Appreciate the answers. Guess we all have to start somewhere in the world of trying to generate some return. Sounds like not much there but...somethings...better than nothing.

I cover my content site's hosting fees (and then some) with Tribal Fusion banner ads. I could do better if I ran popups, popunders, and other intrusive ads, but I'm not willing to annoy my readers.

What makes the ads worth running is Tribal Fusion's serving of defaults. I run affiliate banners for the unsold inventory, and Tribal Fusion serves them at no charge. The banners provide support for the text links in the "Book & Buy" column on every page, and they actually generate some clickthroughs (and presumably some sales) on their own. So, between covering my hosting fees and getting a free ad server, I find it worthwhile to use Tribal Fusion as my ad network. Now, if only they could get some targeted ads at my nominal CPM of $10, I'd really be happy!
