do I take the offer?

I've been offered a decent amount to advertise a website. I need the $$. However, I feel it will lower the tone of the website, and may well discourage other potential advertisers.

What do you think - am I being an ad snob or is it a legit concern?

It certainly could be a legit concern. I can think of advertisers who might want to advertise on my site who I would NOT want there. But it's a judgment call, one you have to make.

Imagine if someone wanted to put up a billboard in your front garden, you could use the money....

What would you do then? You might annoy the neighbours (visitors), it may be an eyesore.

He wants to work with advertisers. He's just not sure about THIS advertiser.

The question you have to ask yourself, is whether the short-term gain of $$ now is worth the long-term loss if other advertisers are put off.

Right, and the short term gains pale in comparison to the longer term possibilities - I think I have to walk away from it

Sounds like the right choice. If the advertiser isn't up to the level of quality you want to maintain on your site, don't touch it.

Why not work with them and see if they can create create a ad/landing page that will be more on the level of what you are looking for?
