Monetizing text files / my good deed for the day

Have a friend hosting simple text files for a hobby site. She is going to shut the site down because "it is so busy and costs too much to host". She currently makes nothing off the traffic! :)

I want to help her keep going as I am sure with the traffic she can make some decent cash.

But... I do not know how to monetize text files. Any ideas?

I thought about suggesting the dreaded popup or too, but I have no experience. I wonder if popups work on a simple text file.

Any kind suggestions would be appreciated...

By the way, it is a simple php directory with links to hordes of text files.

Text files are not downloaded files, but text to view from the browser.

Need to monetize! :)

Any tips?

Try adsense.

Use a CMS (or not) and offer the text files as html pages w/ links to view & print the pages as text files. Put adsense on the html pages. Voila! Or, if there is enough traffic put CPM ads on the printer friendly pages like MapQuest... You could also considering compiling the information in an ebook or on CD & offering that for sale. Lastly, if there is enough demand, you could make the site subscription based and have people pay to obtain the full articles.

...just a few ideas off the top of my head...

Duh. Wrapper idea is a great one.

Thank you too Celicaphile for the other suggestions. Perfect.

Time to get to work.
