From the affiliate side, this looks like a pretty good deal, but recalling that Gator also had a good aff program....

Take a look at the alexa toolbar as shown to JohnQ [pages.alexa.com], then the one shown to affiliates [pages.alexa.com].

I think alexa is treading dangerous waters with their affiliate program for the toolbar. We're talking about potential lifetime customers for Amazon affiliates potentially stolen from other affiliates. I'm going to assume, until I hear otherwise, that the toolbar will override any cookies set by regular affiliate links.

Also I can just see it now - the next time I go some some site I'm gonna get that popup window asking if I should trust all content from alexa...and bam! I get a new toolbar I didn't ask for and some monkey out there is skimming off my Amazon purchases....

No sign of any auto-download, that's a slippery-slope issue, I guess. But, I hadn't thought of the overriding of other amazon aff codes. Nothing is simple in this biz, is it?

I don't think this is part of the scumware issue, but it does get rather close to it.

I wonder which look the bar actually has? Does the one supplied by an affiliate actually look different? Or is this misleading?

I think the branding could be great, especially for a shopping/deals/coupons site.

Too bad the amazon affiliate program is a poor setup for the affiliate (IMO), this could be a real contender.

>>that's a slippery-slope issue, I guess

exactly - that's all I'm saying. We've seen that type of behaviour happen more than once. You only have to go digging through the old DotCom Morgue threads to see the evidence...and results...

I took a very long look at offering the Alexa toolbar for download here in early january.

The difference in appearance is one is just a newer version of the toolbar.

I also think the Amazon link is only accredited (and hence a cookie) when the link from the toolbar is used on that specific product.

Here is how mine currently looks and it is the edition with the embedded affiliate link to Amazon:
