Do you prefer to redirect your visitor to the merchant through same window or new window? Why?

New window - but I mark it with "Link will open in a new window".

I don't particularly like to send my traffic away. I make the assumption that if you liked one thing on my site and want to buy it, that you may not be done and will buy something else before you go. By informing the folks that it'll open in a new window, they are now aware that if they really want to leave my site, they can close the window. If not, I'll be waiting there in the background for when they get done.

There will be lots of people who dispute this technique and there are several other thoughts on it.

Who's right?

Who knows?

It depends.

If you are promoting 1 single merchant, then same window could be the way to go.

If you are comparing different merchants or products, opening new windows helps with comparison. However this may annoy some visitors, so use it with caution.

There are javascripts that give the user the control of opening links in new windows or not, but I doubt many users use/understand it. The ones that would are probably more likely to want windows to open in the same window, and would right-click to open in a new window.
