I disagree. As a DMOZ editor, I've often seen sites with unique, relevant content disregarded as an "affiliate site" when they apply a second or third time, and I see the previous comments.
I think the DMOZ rules for editors are fair, but some editors are a bit over-zealous and can't see the unique, relevant content, because they're blinded by a couple affiliate links.
I'm sure your contributions here will be welcome, and treated with the highest level of respect.
Interesting thread this, I have a different perspective.
As a merchant, getting PR passed on from an affiliate is a vital part of the relationship, and I am prepared to pay larger commissions for affiliates who can do it.
However, I am struggling to find a solution. All the suggestions so far have been something the affilates have to impliment, or they have to trust me, and as a new merchant to the affiliates, that trust is not built yet.
(I track all sales, and know exactly who refered it, and have been selling online now for over 3 years, so am not a very new merchant).
Is there another way of doing this? A bit of script on my page that will tell the aff programme there has been a referer?
finally, I see more merchants (myself included) offering special prices to my affiliates customers. Afterall,it offers new content, that changes ever month making the sale easier for both of us. Anyone who removes the code, will also lose the special price :). That would be silly!
