Spain's own Google now seems to be fully functional, with 3 search options: to search the web, to search only pages in Spanish, and to search only pages from Spain (presumably geo-targeting based on domain server IP address)

Previously google.es redirected to google.com, then to a new Google Spain web in English, and now it gives Spanish as the default language and includes the options mentioned above.

Yeah, noticed that this morning. Just got into the office in Barcelona yesterday and it redirected to .es

Cool!

Lucky you, Crush, I love Barcelona.
As usual Google is the best: search in Galego, Euskara and Català.

AdWords for Spain also now launched, with Larry and Sergey making a personal appearance at the Madrid office :)

Hopefully AdSense for Spanish sites will follow soon.

I was already accessing Google in Catalan for few years ago. And it was possible in Galician, Spanish or Basque, too.

The only difference now is when I try to access to google.com, it redirects me to google.es in Spanish instead of google.com/intl/ca/ in Catalan. Why? Because they think everybody who lives in Spain shall speak Spanish... and this is untrue (Catalan, Basque, Galician, Aranes and Asturian are widely spoken languages other than Spanish).

I know I can select my interface language with cookies, but till now I don't need to do so, why now?

There would be a quite simple solution: they should look at the browser's language preferences and don't presume which language I must or mustn't understand.

Hi David - welcom to WebmasterWorld :)

>they should look at the browser's language preferences and don't presume

Agreed! We had a very good discussion with Matt in London about handling language preferences and things like that. Their serps are often way off with different language settings searching non-english.

Let's hope they will work on it ;)
