850K new domain names under TLD de registered this year alone.
Still the clear #1 under all ccTLDs.
No doubt, if you want to target Germany go for a .de. Everything else - info, biz, net etc is just second choice.
De is what builds trust for the german audience, especially for ecommerce sites.
Top Level Domains per 30.11.2002:
COM 21.892.550
DE 5.938.340
UK 3.868.421
NET 3.672.309
ORG 2.418.517

Nice figures Heini. :) The trust argument was used to try and convince people in Ireland to buy .ie. The problem was that a .ie costs 156 Euros a year.
The interesting thing would be to see a breakdown of website:domain figures. I may do a breakdown of German com/net/org domain ownership over the next week.

Clearly where there is good internet access and affordable cctld domains, there is going to be a far greater usage of the cctld. Where cctlds are expensive, the usage will be in the CNO favour.
I have yet to do the website analysis on the figures.

You'll continue to see the registration explosion across the board in all ccTLDs (except those that rely on 3rd level as in com.cn etc. and when pricing is beyond what the market is willing to pay)
The King of all ccTLDs will be .US now that it has been deregulated AND the fact that come summer Kids.US will be released ...this restricted area set aside for kids under 13 will explode becuse the bill explicitly states that Kids.US MUST be publized and not only the kids but also the parents are to be EDUCATED on kids.us
"kids" will be "imprinted" with .US as the internet..
"SEC. 5. EDUCATION AND OVERSIGHT.
(a) EDUCATION- The Secretary of Commerce, acting through the National
Telecommunications and Information Administration, shall carry out
a program to publicize the availability of the new domain and to
educate the parents of minors regarding the process for utilizing
the domain in combination and coordination with hardware and
software technologies that provide for filtering or blocking of
unsuitable content. The program under this subsection shall be
commenced not later than 30 days after the date that the new
domain first becomes operational and accessible by the public."
In all public schools we are talking about over 50 million Kids to be TAUGHT about Kids.US and that address will be used in the schools for internet sites (as much as possible).
This Kids.US law will also boost the rate of registrations in the .US extension from simple awareness; even at this stage .US registration are nearly DOUBLE .Info and .BIZ on a daily basis.
I've been preaching ccTLD for the past 6 months..You'll continue to see the registration explosion across the board in all ccTLDs (except those that rely on 3rd level as in com.cn etc. and when pricing is beyond what the market is willing to pay)
Unfortunately in Ireland, we are stuck with a very poorly run cctld. The cost of a .ie can vary from about 60 Euros (~$60) where hosting companies are selling the cctld at cost as a loss leader, to about 156 Euros which is what the Irish domain registry charges. As a direct result, most Irish businesses and people have gone for .com/net/org. However Irish use of .info is not that high and I think the first level scan of that tld was resulted in about 129 hits. The government is considering stripping the current Irish domain registry company of the administration of .ie and there is hope in the industry that the cost of .ie would fall considerably. Many Irish businesses selling to Ireland (rather than abroad) would prefer .ie.
I am not sure how .US would go. It is pitching at one of the biggest markets in the world. If the cost of .us is less than that of .info (currently requires a 2 year fee intially I think) then it will severely affect growth of .info and .biz. It may also have an impact on .org as this is traditionally a more educational orientated tld.
The danger for some cctlds is that they are already on some hardline SysAdmins' mail blackhole lists. Due to extremely high amounts of spam from countries like Korea and China, some admins just drop any mail from .cn or .kr. A deregulated .us may also run that risk. I am not sure how the takeup of .us will run but it may take a few years to get established.
