That was one massive list of Greek search engines, that I found at robby.gr! It would seem, that Greece has more of them than any other country in Europe. Is the programming of search engines something that is taught from the first grade in your primary schools or is it just the secret dream of every Greek to own one? ;)
Seriously though: Could you clue us in as to which are the important ones? I'll try to update the board later today to reflect this new information. But we'll definitely need your help to sort this out.
www.in.gr: Quite stupid as long as the web site around it. But it has the biggest budget of all (may be one of the bigest budgets in europe) on advertising so it has a hudge traffic. Getting listed in the in.gr directory is a must.
www.iboom.gr, www.thea.gr: Just redesigned, quite promising.
www.gr-indexer.gr, www.evresi.gr: Nice working, and simple search engines that get some trafic to the web sites.
www.trinity.gr, vresto.otenet.gr: New search engines, not yet advertised. From what I can understand as a profetional it may be the tomorow search engines for greece. I strongly suggest you get listed there cause once it gets advertised it will be the most usefull tools in the greek internet. Currently wou want't find them in any other listing. Trinity supports the results of in.gr in the past few months.
the rest: Nothing exciting.
Some stats from our servers:
www.in.gr/62,06%
www.trinity.gr/24,62%
www.gogreece.com/3,84%
www.thea.gr/2,40%
www.robby.gr/1,70%
www.pathfinder.gr/1,31%
www.robby.gr/1,04%
search.pathfinder.gr/1,12%
search.hol.gr/0,70%
www.iboom.gr/0,80%
www.fora.gr/0,03%
www.evresi.gr/0,10%
vresto.otenet.gr/0,10%
www.pan.gr/0,09%
search.hol.gr/0,09%
Don't relay on the numbers, i'll get a better list in a couple of weeks. this is just a draft from two high traffic web sites.

1) You can get multiple domain names, up to ten, as long as you are a company or you have registered trademarks for the domain names you register. Get full instructions at [gr...]
2) Greek is the only native language. The most people learn english at school, French is more rare.
3) There is also .com.gr domains. For more info search the url at 1 (I don't know if there are others too)
4) Be aware of the profetional help that many companies offer. They usualy use tools like Addweb and webpossition to automaticly submit your web site to the search engines. After that... nothing. They offer search engine possitioning because they saw such a service at a worldwide competitor's web site but they don't know what it means. You'll have to get a SEO that knows his job and works for a company that let him (at least) do his job the right way.
I have now updated under the heading "Known general search engines", with the help of the list at robby.gr. I took all the ones that looked like real SE:s working from an index of spidered sites. Some of them seemed to be more like searchable directories, so I left them out. You may wish to double check that I did this right.
Robby's list of Greek directories is so enormous (60), that I wonder if we should really have them all or maybe concentrate on the 10-20, which you think are the most important. What do you think?
I have also updated in the head based on your info plus re-checked Greek pages in Fast Search, which turned out to have more pages than Altavista, which I used originally.
Having been a casual silent lurker on this Forum so far, now I've a little question myself: I am helping a friend of mine with SEO - thanks to what I read here :-) - for a small page about a private holiday apartment in Greece. Now this friend asked me about "Greek Spider" (www.greekspider.com). I found out that they actually request a link to them in order to get one's site added ("we are currently only adding sites that add a link to Greek Spider"). This is quite a demand as one cannot put links to all SEs on one's site...
Therefore: Does anyone have experience with this particular SE? Does it bring traffic that would justify such a link to them? (Especially considering prospects for renting a holiday apartment...)
Thank you very much, great forum anyway!
P.S.: Should I submit this question also to the "The Rest of the Engines" section? As this SE is not centred on Greece: "Greek Spider is a ... Greek search engine ... in ... Canada. One of the main aims ... is to help unify the 17 million Greeks around the world, ..."
I don't know about greekspider but generally, I would never submit anything to anyone who asks for a link back. If they can't make it on the basis of good search replies, then why bother? So, I am all with cgeo on this one.
BTW: If he is promoting a holiday apartment in Greece, then surely the big engines used in places like Germany and Scandinavia would be of the greatest importance, rather then obscure search engines geared to Greece?
And yes, Germany and Britain are the main target countries to promote the apartment - we are already listed in WEB.DE and in the German section of ODP :-) Furthermore we have excellent rankings in FAST - and are anxiously awaiting the other spiders ;-)
Thanks again! Great support I found here - especially when convincing my friend that his Flash-only site was of no use to SEs... I think this one (now in profile) has solved that.
I notice this thread has been inactive for a while but I was hoping for some fresh insight into Greek engines. I have a client who has asked for some SEO in Greece. My question is does anybody know which of the major paid inclusion programs (Ink, AV, Fast/Lycos, Teoma) will have an effect in Greek engines? I guess the real question is does anybody know if any of the Greek engines listed above are powered by the major index providers? I'm also interested in any PPC opportunities in Greece (in addition to Google AWS) but that's for another forum...
p.s. I am not really a new user but my old user profile seems to have died
To my best knowledge none of the international majors has any presence in Greece. Not even Google seems to offer a localized version?
There is [google.com...] but no option to search greece sites, and no greece interface.
Espotting, Overture... nothing. If there are PPC offers then it would be local players.
No Lycos, no AV, no Yahoo, mind you not even MSN has gone there.
From the western world at least Greece is a pretty unexplored internet market.
Since your reply it seems that Google have added a Greek version of the site at [google.com.gr....] My Greek isn't great (!) but it seems you can search for Greek sites (by selecting the right of the 2 radio buttons under the search box).
On the PPC front, Google AdWords Select offers the opportunity to target users in Greece although you can't target Greek language users. However the traffic estimates are practically zero (which is surprising as the client is in the travel sector). Even so I think I will test this for my client and see how it goes.
Anyway - thanks for your information, Bonehead.
You say you are trying to put up adwords for travel searches - do you really want to target Greek speaking audineces, or do you want to advertize Greece as destination to the rest of the world? Just curious.
So that's why I'm considering using Google AWS, targeting Greek users, using English and Greek search terms. Do you have any other suggestions?
hope it helps

Thanks for the link, but you have to know a little greek to make use of it, eh? ;)
Do you have more info on the current search engine scene in Greece these days?
I dug a bit around ODP and found this one:
