While Yahoo.com is not in the best shape - huge losses for the sixth quarter in a row - it's european division is under heavy pressure.
The european portals add to the losses, failing to grow revenues, suffering hard from the sluggish advertizing market.
Worse, Y! loses marketshare and audience to MSN, AOL and European ISPs, including Wanadoo in France and T-Online in Germany.
see here for figures: yahoo.news [story.news.yahoo.com]

Consequences? Yahoo Europe tries to break free from dependance on ads. New revenue sources must be explored.
In order to get this going Y! thinks about buying into the access market, also more paid services are discussed.

Not more than 2 years ago Yahoo.Europe was a highly profitable business - today they are struggling not to drown.

Of the heavy weights in Europe Yahoo probably is in the worst position - along with the Lycos group.. All competitors have a solid foundation in ISP services - Y! and Lycos still live and die with ad revenues.

And who is the real winner in this situation? MSN.

Do not forget the local players.
who's saying that the Internet is a global business?
Now after some years of original creativity Y is loosing every competitive advantage.
Y doesn't learn from many US companies failure in Europe. The European Market is NOT the US market, back to school... Boys.

In all altrernatives listed in that article, none is convincing and has a chance of success.
The real route is "offer broadband and dial-up services" in cooperation with the big players of course.
