This is the reply to Air's question about Ilse in another discussion.
"Anyone have information like User Agent, IP Addresses, Domains preferred for indexing etc. for ilse? Any info is much appreciated."

I have tried Ilse and deciphered the submit and webmaster help pages plus made a test search:

1. Ilse takes its international results from NBCi
2. Indexes nl-domain regardless of language
3. Indexes all pages in Dutch, regardless of domain
4. Pays lots of attention to title, description and keywords.
5. Cannot follow links in image maps.
6. Honors robots.txt file

For more, we need the help of someone with experience in Dutch search engines, but I am not sure if we have any Dutch members here at WmW.

Hi!
The administrator of WebmasterWorld is a bit concerned about the screen name you have chosen (guest) and has tried to e-mail you about it, in order to ask you to register something else. But the private mail address that you gave does not work and his message was returned.

Could you please register again as something else (anything but guest) and make sure that you type your e-mail address correctly.

As to "detailed info on the terms you use" could you please give me some examples of the things you need more info on.

OK I see. Here are some explanations:

- Language interface: The language(s) used on the search engine's own pages

- Traffic volume: E.g. numver of searches/month or number of unique visitors per month or just size relative to other search engines in the country.

- Local language(s) required: If the language(s) of the country is necessary to have on the site for the search engine/directory to index the site.

- Local domain(s) only: If it is neccessary to have your site in the local domain (e.g. nl)for the search engine/directory to index the site.

-Search technology: The type of technology used e.g. own technology, Fast, Altavista, Google etc.

- Meta description used in search replies: If the text in the meta description for each page is shown by the search engine in search replies. (E.g. Altavista does it, but not Fast)

- Things that help ranking: Elements on the web page that give a higher ranking in search replies.

- Local language: If the page is in the language(s) of the country

- Local domain: If the site is registered in the local domain e.g. .nl

- Keyword in URL: If the word used for the search is found in the address of the site.

- Keyword in title: If the word used for the search is found between
and
in the head of the page.

- Keyword in description: If the word used for the search is found in the Meta description

- Keyword in meta keywords: If the word used for the search is found in Meta keywords

- Keyword in header: If the word used for the search is found between
and

- Keyword in 1st paragraph: If the word used for the search is found between the first set of
and
after

- Other: Any other observations about shings that increase rankings or anything else.

For directories also:

- No. of categories allowed per site: How many different categories can a site be listed under, e.g. 1, 2, 3 etc.

- Search method: If searches in the directory are performed for site name and description only, or the full text of the pages listed. Or any other variation.

I hope this will explain things.

Thank you gimmens and "Welkom" to WebmasterWorld. I hope you will like this "University of Search Engine Optimization". I am sorry for the problems you had registering. The registration procedure has been down for 24 hours, but is now back online as you noticed.

I have updated the main entry for Netherlands with your info on G!imme. Any other help you can give to further the understanding of Dutch search engines will be greatly appreciated. So, keep up the good work.

From the logs:

[planet.nl]

Uses av.com for web searches. Not sure if they are classed as a "proper" SE, looks like a portal.

Note: I would not call this a search engine. It is a collection link pages manually maintained by a few hundred people (all volunteers). These volunteers maintain a page about their favorite subject. Examples are mp3.pagina.nl, php.pagina.nl, etc.

You can get an overview of all subjects at www.pagina.nl.

The actual starting page is at www.startpagina.nl

"Welkom" to WebmasterWorld Jaap and thanks for the info on Dutch search engines. I hope you will like this place. As you can see, there is an enourmous amount of high class information tucked away in the thousands of discussions. I hope you will find it all, but it will take you a month of reading, at least.

I will update the main entry for Nederland with your info on Ilse, Vindex, Altavista and Pagina within the next few days.

How does one do that - send a separate e-mail, or....?

Are you promoting your own SE here?

Gimme.com certainly is not a familiar SE in the Netherlands.

Please keep information in forums as these as accurate as possible.

Hello Val and "Welkom" into the European forum. Little did I know that we have a Dutch preferred member here at WmW. Soon to enter the venerable ranks of senior members too, I notice. Thanks for lending us a hand here. We haven't got nearly the amount of good info on Dutch engines and directories as we have for some of the other countries.

Will update the main entry with your info on Ilse, which I guess is *THE* Dutch SE, right? Looking forward to hearing from you more.

Val:
I notice that the page you linked to has 41 Dutch search engines. Alba36 on the other hand shows 117
[db.alba36.com...] Could you comment upon the difference between these two lists? I think Alba may use a somewhat wider definition of "Search Engine".

I read the table showing relationships between the search engines with much interest and look forward to the English translation. In the meantime, could you verify this:

Does "Zoekmachines welke exact dezelfde resultaten laten zien" mean "Search engines that show exactly the same results" and does "Zoekmachines/directories welke gedeeltelijk dezelfde resultaten laten zien" mean "SE:s/directories that show similar results"?

Thanks beforehand.

Zoekmachines/directories welke gedeeltelijk dezelfde resultaten laten zien" mean "SE / Dir which are showing a part of the the search results from others"

Like a meta SE.

Your first Guess was right!

The most sites from [db.alba36.com...]
are local small SE, specificly for a city. Or they arte just to small to anything with them.

Groetjes,

>> (Note: Jou have to ask them to include a domain other then .NL)

> How does one do that - send a separate e-mail, or....?

When you go to the submission page at [info.ilse.nl...] and submit a com domain (I tried: www.webmasterworld.com) that is not allready listed then you get the following reply:

In short the translation is: The domain you entered can not be indexed, because the ilse spider can not determine if this page is from a Dutch company or Dutch person (the page has to be from a Dutch company or person, but the language does not have to be Dutch). Visit the ilse help system at help.ilse.nl.

If you then go to the help system, you can enter your name, e-mail and URL and they will look at it (I hope). But as you can see, the page has to be from a Dutch company or person, so www.webmasterworld.com would probably not get accepted.

>(the page has to be from a Dutch company or person, but the language does not have to be Dutch)

This is really good info Jaap. It seems that Ilse has a very unusual policy. All other leading European SE:s will index all sites in the domain regardless of language PLUS all pages in the language regardless of domain. But Ilse requires that a Dutch person och company owns the site.

This means that any non-Dutch company that wants to reach a Dutcg audience via their own local and leading search engine, needs not just a local traslator and local SEO expertise, but also a local contact to "front" the operation of the site.

Do you know if this is a service usually provided by Dutch SEO-people?

Ilse

>Do you know if this is a service usually
>provided by Dutch SEO-people?

No, sorry. But would this help non Dutch sites? It seems to me that ilse looks at the owner of the domain. Is it a Dutch company or not. At least that is what I understand from their page info.

What I could do is submit (as a test) [webmasterworld.com...] to ilse with my own e-mail address and see what happens. Will they accept it or not? Should be an interesting test case, also for me, because I've never submitted a non Dutch site to ilse.

"Welkom" to WebmasterWorld Damian and thanks for the info on 1steKeuze (btw: what does Keuze mean?). I hope you will find yourself at home here in "Internet's Search Engine University".

Jaap: I guess that what I had really had in mind was that a Dutch SEO-company might register a .nl address on behalf of a foreign client, translate and optimize their existing site, run it locally and submit it to Ilse and other local engines.

Lots of American and other companies want to get into the rich European countries, but almost everywhere they will be faced with the need for a local domain to get into search engines. I just thought this might be a pretty good business for the locals.

What you might try to do is to register the url to this discussion:
[webmasterworld.com...]
if they are prepared to follow links to dynamic content.

Thanks Rencke,
1stekeuze means 1stChoice in Dutch.

We have registered and promote several dutch domains on behalf of foreign partners, pointing the dns to their own servers abroad or to our server...any dutch company is allowed to apply for a dutch domain and point it to any server.

I think it should also possible to register a dutch domain as a foreign company 'directly', if you allow the dutch registration company to become the official owner of the domain.

Here's a list of companies that are allowed to register dutch domains directly
[nic.nl...]
