A few general notes from my knowledge:
- Spaniards not only use Spaniard SEs, but also other (mainly Latinamerican) Spanish written indexes. It could be useful to work all of them.
- Most of Spanish indexes are directories and only accept sites in this language.
- For most of directories, it'll be enough to have just one gateway homepage translated into Spanish. But this is changing, specially with the majors.
- Automatic (by software) translation doesn't work.
- Most used SEs in the Spanish-speaking online world appear to still be Altavista and Yahoo! (their main sites, in English).
- Terra have acquired Lycos and both companies are merging by the end of October. Some changes are expected in their systems.
- Terra España main database is shared with other Terra regional versions. It also shows alternative results from Inktomi if no matches were found in the directory db.
- Yahoo! España shares its main database with its other Spanish versions (Yahoo! en Español, Yahoo! México and Yahoo! Argentina). You should submit to one of them and your listing (if accepted) will be in all. There's no a payed Express Submission program available.
Hope it helps
About .ar search engines: I see that there is quite a lot of them. I guess the ones that the Spaniards would prefer would be the ones with general content in Spanish, rather than the ones that only provide info on Argentinian sites. Do you know which that might be, so I could list them. All of .ar is going to be a bit much I'm afraid.?
The Terra-Lycos merger is very interesting, particularly in view of the expansion plans at Lycos and their buying 5% of Fast Search. But is Lycos Europe part of this? Their main owners are listed as Lycos Inc, German and Swedish outfits. Terra is a major telephone company in Spain, is that right? And would it be correct to assume that they are one of the big SE players in Spain?
Generally, all the Hispanic online population (Spaniards and Latin-American) prefer the ones with general content in Spanish.
There is a little "chaos" in the Spanish indexes world. So many indexes for only a few million surfers.
In the first days there were only a few sites in this language. So the directories listed any Spanish written site, no matter what country it was related to. When Hispanic people searched for info in their language, they went to any of these indexes. There are still many of them, and one (Terra) become a major player (as you exactly assume) in the whole Spanish world and not only in Spain. Other important players in Spain are Telepolis, Biwe, Hispavista and of course Yahoo! España, and all of them lists sites from any country.
Beyond all those indexes, there are many more which only lists sites related to their country of origin. Not only Argentinean, but also Mexican, Chilean, etc... Some of them are important for their country audience: Ozú and ElIndice in Spain, as example.
I don't think it is useful to list all of these SEs, many don't worth a deep job. You can see a list I've published by country at my site [tiemposmejores.com.ar...]
It was compiled based in data collected by myself, there aren't much independent statistics about all this matter. This could change shortly, MediaMetrix (and maybe others) is beginning to work in Spain, and next year in LatAm.
Ref. Terra-Lycos: It isn't sure that Lycos Europe will be part of the merger, but it's possible. When they announced the deal a couple of months ago, one of Lycos Europe main owners, Bertelsmann (a German company, if I'm not wrong), said they were interested in participate.
Terra is owned by Telefonica, which is the major Spain teleco as you say. They enter in this game acquiring Olé more than a year ago. Olé was the major Spanish directory then. Telefonica is also a big teleco in many LatAm countries, and they expanded into Latinamerica with the same tactic: buying a few established local directories to build their local versions of Terra. They have three main databases: Terra Argentina, Terra México (lists only Mexican sites) and Terra España, which is shared for most of all the other Terra versions.
Spanish Lycos is (in fact, are) a little more complex: in results they first list sites from their directories (one for each country version) and then results provided by Fast. Not all the local directories are active and I presume this will change with the merger. They are really wasting resources with so many databases.
Lycos by itself is not a very important player in the Spanish online world.
Do you have anything about requirements for listing and/or indexing sites and ranking for these engines, that you can share with us?
Also: Thank you for the "ñ" in your post. I knew I had misspelled España in the title, but couldn't figure out how to get the letter onto the board. Now corrected and the Spaniards can now see the correct name for their country.
I also noticed that nearly all spanish SEs are directories, and they show alternative results (if they do at all) from different global players:
·Inktomi
·Altavista
·Lycos
·Infoseek (Go.com)
·Google
It´s exciting because you can submit your Spanish Sites to the international SEs, and it could help to increase your traffic though you aren´t in directories.
It´s very interesting to read that many spanish people use english-based SEs. I thought it would be like in Germany (where the most didn´t use others than german SEs).
Thanks for the good informations, I am looking forward to the rest ones...;-)
If you could give me that info on a per engine basis, I would be happy to update the main chart above with that info.
Bertelsmann 27% of Lycos. Interesting. There is a story in Swedish Newspapers today that Spray is obliged to buy Lycos Europe shares up to 19% over the next two years. And there are other European owners as well. I wonder: Perhaps Lycos Europe should be vewed as a European company, having some sort of franchise from an American corporation (much like McDonalds restaurants and Holiday Inns) ?

Ozú, Sol, Telépolis, Terra and Trovator are also directories.
Señas is a search engine owned by Trovator.
rencke: try "Alt+164" to get the "ñ"
oLeon: you generally could expect more than 60% of your Spanish search engine traffic coming from Altavista and Yahoo! (the main and/or their Spanish versions).
I'll be back later :)
untill today we only want to submit to www.lycos.es, because we think the pages would come into he same db as the rest of the lycos.network.
But now I am really not sure about that:
are all spanish-lycos using the same db or shall we submit to every single lycos-searchengine (argentina, spain ...)?
Also I am curios about, whether it´s right, that the lycos-spain, -mexico ... all only accept submits to their directories? I only got addurl-pages to directories, and now I am not sure anymore, if I can submit to the "normal" index at all.
To register in Terra's directory go to
[buscador.terra.es...] and navigate to the directory you want to be in. Then click on the tab "Darse del Alta" in the top row. If your Spanish is rusty, you might want to surf the site through:
[babelfish.altavista.com...] Set the list box to "Spanish to English" and enter the above url into the address field.
Anyway how quickly does terra add submitted sites, or review them?
Another thing: Does anybody have usage figures for spanish Google?
1.- terra.es 2.8 million unique users
2.- yahoo.es 2.4 million unique users
3.- altavista.es 830 thousand unique users
4.- lycos.es 637 thousand unique users
5.- eresmas.com 469 thousand unique users
6.- ya.com 376 thousand unique users
7.- Google.com/int/es/ 361 thousand unique users
8.- Navegalia.com 311 thousand unique users
9.- msn.es 275 thousand unique users
10.- Wanadoo.es 263 thousand unique users
This 10 Search Properties attrach the 90% of the Total Spanish users
There are different sources to find out information about Spanish S.E's. For me the best is AUI.es (Internet Users Asociation), plenty of links with the main spanish info sites.
Terra.es is a directory with secondary results provided by Inktomi
Terra.com gets reesults from looksmart.com and Inktomi (secundary)
The main directory who runs Fast's technology is Ya.com (owned by T-online)
In the main page on the left hand side to can see "Estadisticas" (Stats) with the diferent data from EGM, OJD (both are similar to ABC) Netvalue, Jupiter among others. If you scroll down you can see different International, Latin-american and IPS's stats
However I think the numbers for Altavista.es is hard to find. I couldn't find them anywhere in the top 10's. Can you figure it out.
We know spanish is a big language, but the numbers for unique visitors is not that big. I would expect that people from other spanish speaking regions in the World use their own local search engines hence the numbers would be bigger.
Maybe we can find some numbers for those also?
