Hi,

I am well aware that most non-English speakers prefer to search in their natural language, and to this end I am looking into translating my home page into 9 or 10 European languges. My question is will this be enough, or will I have to translate the whole site in order to get acceptance on European websites? Or does it simply come down to my domain suffix?

Hi Campervanbasten,

Welcome to WebmasterWorld this place is a gold mine of information.

The best strategy is to translate the hole site in different languages. Each site sould have is own domain name and all the sites should be linked together.

Rencke did post some very interesting stuff about this earlyer. Do not miss those treads:

Thanks Macguru!

I may concentrate on Spanish, French and German for the time being, do about 30 years overtime and save enough to get the others translated!

Hi campervanbasten
Translating just an index page is a somewhat dubious strategy. To follow MacGuru´s advice is of course much better but also a bit more expensive.

After all it´s a business decision: what do you expect, what are you willing to invest?
Generally to generate sales building a site in the targeted language is highly recommendable. Also the SEO value is much higher.
Another issue you will have to consider is the topic of the site. If the site targets only professional techies for example parts of the site might be in english(manuals, that kind of stuff).

If you´d sticky me the url I might take a look at the site in question.
