I run an international multilingual site...I'd say world wide judging by our logs it is

1. MSN

2. Yahoo

3. google

4. altavista

5. lycos

all including all the regional variants...we don't rank too well on altavista though (or google at present)

however...most countries seem to have a local SE that out performs most or all of the international ones

I agree with Eric, except that I would add all the engines based on Fast's index together and put them in the #5 slot, i.e. Lycos and other Fast based engines. But please keep in mind what I wrote about regional engines here [webmasterworld.com]. Focusing on the big international engines can lead you completely astray, since local engines hold the dominant market shares in most countries.

As to Italy, there is not all that much information in our discussion on Italian Search engines [webmasterworld.com], but Arianna and Virgilio are the unquestioned leaders and Jumpy has been mentioned as being very popular.

We haven't even got Superava, Iol and MSN.it on the list as you can see. (Or did you mean SuperEva?)Is there anything you can tell us about them? (If so, please post that in the Italy discussion.)

The question marks in the country overviews "?" mean that we have no information on the matter. So: "Understanding of English: ?" in the Italy discussion means that we have no information on how many Italians understand the language or on the level of foreign language teaching in Italian schools.

Actually, we had a discussion about a study on the European language situation [webmasterworld.com] in February this year, which is very interesting. The EU survey mentioned in it has now been published in English, German and French and shows - among other things - that 30,4% of the Italians understand English and 18,9% French.

Now that the full results are available, I will be updating all the country discussions with this information as soon as possible.

>Where can I find some adjour statistics about the SE

We try to publish statistics for those European countries, where they exist, in the respective country discussions. So there is quite a lot of it around here on a per country basis.
