There are more sites in the msn.nl directory though. I wonder if this could be a partly automated process.
The last directory listing I got in msn.nl was for a page that is only a redirect to a completly different domain if you are not a known spider. It is not in looksmart.
The title and description are not mine, it looks like a human at msn made these. Especially since they made a spelling mistake in the business name of our client, which is not on the original page.
Could be coincidence, but I had several other pages that were included without submission, without looksmart listing, and which would normally probably not be accepted in a directory anyway.
As far as I know there is no submission form. They do have a feedback form, I never used it to get sites listed.
They assign a huge number of keywords to each listing and are very thorough, but hard to follow.
My own dutch directory site for example, comes up for any variation, common misspelling, dutch translation and plural of the keyword 'search engine'.
Great, i'm not complaining of course. Just like to know how I got in in the first place, and how they subsequently determine keywords.
What's even more surprising..we come up for keyword 'google' ..but not for any other of the major engines. Other dutch search sites that are similar to mine got associated with other major search engines
:)Ah well..if you have to pick one..
Title and description for this listing are from looksmart.nl
So, they add keywords to looksmart listings as well as to their own directory listings. I guess they have some related keyword suggestion tool for the editors where they can pick the relevant ones from a list.
Other listings that are in msn's directory and not in looksmart also have extra keywords...some very generic and only indirectly related. Some have more extra keywords then others.
Anyone have a theory on how they find additional listings and how the relevant keywords are decided ?
I was hoping this system wasn't unique to the netherlands..
Do you know if other european msn directories add their own listings to looksmart's at all ?
If I learn anything I'll post here. I have emailed msn.nl about this but did not receive a reply yet.
One thing I think I'm seeing is new keywords being added to existing listings. Maybe the process of selecting keywords is fully automated after all...
A search for search engine submission [search.msn.com] for example, returns listings on top that do not have those words in their title or description either.
Looks to me like they have a similar system in place where they know 'search engine submission'is somehow related to things like 'submit url'.
Just to clarify my previous post, with 'keywords being added to existing listings' I meant, after a listing can already be found in msn.nl with some 'extra' keywords, I found more keywords may slowly be added to those.
