utilities for checking on links aquired from this site may be nice, but should be an option for both parties to opt in & out.
bad idea to categorize sites by page rankI would think the best way to go here is PR is never used in the software at all. Only to be mentioned in reference to Google, as in a reference section pertaining to all search engines. Maybe search engines should not even be a topic on the site at all. Maybe focus on the marketing aspect, as how to write a good ad, who is good to link to, why link with competition, how to create market partners and pro/cons behind it, etc.
...that just screams "penalise me"what I am thinking of does not violate any terms of service anywhere, this is not a factor. Get PR off the thinking here. This is about much more than just a link for a small aspect of marketing. I have, in the past recieve a huge amount of traffic through links, and very good traffic (better roi). What about branding/exposure aspects. What about making some good bucks off your best real estate from browsing through a directory like this and finding the right site.
more professional and for the professionalexactly!
not much. Nothing comes close to filling this need.
Found about 10 with sites that come close to this idea.
A couple of them are even worth looking at, but not much more than directory listing.
1 site actually gave some hint to the intent of the listing.
0 sites which showed the advertisement or link in advance.
0 sites had any privacy or anonymity
100's of on-site recip programs
100's of crap ffa pages and backends
-----------------------
some notes / ideas I had while doing this
--need to categorize other valuable/similar sites, only quality here
--need also to review all links programs and show notes about good and bad ffas, scams, etc.
--place for resources and protection/information from fraud
if you want to see the short list I made, just sticky me
But that's really jsut an idea, nothing more.
I think I'll set up a sample system on a dynamic domain for now so we can bounce some ideas off...
I'll get coding monday morning if you don't mind ;)

I would keep all domains and 'real people' hidden from bots and public as well, many real players won't like to display their marketing habits...
emails should be hidden from all but who entered it(for editing)
explicitely say they only exchange with PRx or better sites
It's probably best to flaunt it as a sort of insider area. Might get it started by finding some link exchange pages and addign them.
Prehaps best to keep it all anonymous with site descriptions and linking conditions only.
this site would then have the task of reviewing pages for quality and ensuring compliance with the linking terms.

Like others, I don't think there should be any mention of PR at all. The last thing you would want is for Google to have a problem with the site. I would emphasize that you can get traffic from relevant links.
If links to the involved sites are included on the site I don't think any PR should be able to be given to them. You don't want people signing up just to get their site listed and get PR from that with no intention of exchanging links with legitimate sites.
If there is something I can do to help, let me know.
I have used Linkpartners.com very sucessfullyI personally never liked it. Some sites don't even have their own links pages... they host their links page on linkpartners! Others will link to you from a PR0 page that is 45 clicks into their site (I exaggerate, but you get the picture).
I think you guys are onto a great idea in this thread. I wish I had the coding skills to help, but I don't. However, I would certainly pay for a quality "link introduction" sevice. And I may have some time to be a moderator/editor.
I agree that keeping PR out of the equation is wise. Apart from upsetting the big G, you never know what's around the corner, including replacing of PR with a Mark II version that works substantially differently.
The millions of SEO companies out there that are selling half baked services to the gullible (excluding the good SEOs, of course) would jump at a facility to improve client's popularity for a small price. "I personally identified and contacted 2000 sites, 300 of whom now link to you. That'll be £3,000 please"
Keeping Google from listing the site may actually prove to be more useful than being listed ;-)
This is basically the reason this would be good to setup because there would be none of that in it and being edited and totally / a retentivly modded would mean none of the bad stuff would happen.

New developments are that there are no new developments. We are basically at the moment discussing how it is going to work and who can do what.
Where you may ask?!? Well thats a secret but I can tell you that we dont have the faintest idea about anything at the moment although the ideas being bashed around are quite constructive.
Basically the site will be like a directory where the sites are moderated and therefore vetted before they are allowed into the system. All exchanges will be moderated as well so nobody contacts everyone and asks them as that would be FFA spam stuff and that is what we are desperate to avoid.
The site is going to have lots of information for newbs etc so dont worry one and all.

Searching for links is a tedious task, and something like this site would revolutionalize the link development process, and completely legitimately too!
I wait with bated breath.
I particularly like SlyOldDog's idea
where we write content for each other and make proper contextual links from relevant places within our sites
I have already offered to write original, quality content geared to sites that wish to exchange with my site.
