Users will find significant enhancements in usability, performance, extensibility, security, and privacy in the upcoming test version of Firefox 1.5, the first major upgrade of the popular open-source browser since the launch of Firefox 1.0 in November of last year.

It also looks like the infamous "find as you type" bug has finally been fixed
Sometimes does weird things with single apostrophes when entering text into forms and treats them as a "find" command.
I guess the bug I mentioned hasn't been fixed after all - that used to happen to me all the time, but not with 1.5. I thought it had finally been taken care of, but maybe not.
I'm going nuts here.
If the former, then the problem must be something to do with your OS, not Firefox. I don't see how installing a browser could cause that kind of problem.
If the latter, then you may need to reinstall Java (assuming the menus are Java and not JavaScript). I can't think of anything else that would affect all the browsers on your computer.
You don't say if you overinstalled or if you installed the upgrade to a new location. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, Firefox upgrades should always be installed to new locations and a new profile should be used. Until more uniformity gets into the extensions, this is the only safe way to upgrade Firefox. (And it's not really that much bother; I can normally have it all done, including extensions reinstalled and configured, in about fifteen minutes.)

FYI, Bug #307375 [bugzilla.mozilla.org] looks like the lucky winner. It's getting attention, so my guess is that it'll be addressed before 1.5
