In searching for sources of a photograph that has been appropriated w/o permission, I located one site. The page shows up at an domain, but when using Firefox, at the bottom it indicates "Transferring data from www.(#*$!).com"

The #*$! is to protect the privacy of the server.

Am I correct in assuming the actual content of the domain is originating from the domain indicated by the "Transferring data" message?

The only sure way of telling is to check out the source code directly to find out the exact path to the image file. As you said, it could be hotlinked from another server, so simply checking the address bar for the site URL is not enough.
