Configure Windows so Firefox can receive internet radio (.rtsp)

I'm having trouble accessing internet radio. It worked until I upgrade RealPlayer. I usually use Firefox.

When I click on a link that looks something like: rtsp://DOMAIN/broadcast/CHANNEL.rm?user=111111
Firefox now gives me this alert message:

Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocal (rtsp) isn't associated with any program.

A similar problem occurs with Internet Explorer, so I assume this is something I have to configure in Win XP.

I've tried adding .rtsp ot the file types/applications associations. I did that using Windows Explorer and clicking on Tools > Folder Options > File Types. That didn't work.

Does anyone know how to configure this or get it working?

To register a protocol handler for rtsp in Firefox:

1. Type this into the address bar: about:config
2. Now right click on any entry, and choose "new" and then "string"
3. In the text box that appears, enter: network.protocol-handler.app.rtsp
4. A new text box now appears for the string value -- enter the path to your RealPlayer installation here. It will look something like this: /usr/X11R6/bin/realplay

Just noticed that you are also having a problem with IE. Can you check that your Real installation is actually working? The problem could be there.

I've tried adding .rtsp ot the file types/applications associations.

The problem with that approach is that RTSP is a protocol, just like FTP or HTTP, rather than a file type such as .html or .jpg.

In IE (not Windows) go to Tools > Manage Add-ons and make sure that Real.com is enabled.

the lame thing is that it has to be reg'd into FF, now that's not good! I mean I don't expect a client to do that just to see content! Super lame! I found this tho, but just tweeking it:

Note that the instructions in tedster's message gave an example URL for a Linux installation of Real Player, the path in a Windows install would be something like this:

C:\\Program Files\\Real\\RealPlayer\\realplay.exe

(slashes are escaped for about:config entries).

I think that's what .ram files are all about, no?

Thanks to all for the help.

RealPlayer does work on it's own.

I've followed Tedster's very clear directions for adding RealPlayer to Firefox, and even tried adding the address both as: C:\\Program Files\\Real\\RealPlayer\\realplay.exe
and as:
C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\realplay.exe

Neither works.

In IE, I've looked in Tools > Manage Add-ons and don't see RealPlayer listed. But I don't see anyway to add it, either. (Looks like Microsoft wasn't eager to make that easy.) What do I do since it doesn't appear in either of the disabled or enabled lists?

I've reinstalled RealPlayer to see it that would help. Nope.

The funny thing is that I had it working (without having to do anything before I upgraded to RealPlayer 10.5.
