Do extensions slow down firefox?

Any of the popular ones?

It seems lately that I'm back to the old days of surfing on dial up w/ firefox. If I have multiple windows open, and one or two of the background windows are waiting to load something, my active window won't do anything. Not scroll not respond, nothing. I was just thinking, maybe one of the extensions is causing a problem. Do you know of any that do this? Could it be the google toolbar? Since that does send back data for each url?

I find that extensions do slow my machine down and while they're loading you can't do anything else.

My solution was I wrote my own extension with a search box and bookmarks that is very small.

Hi,

What really causes FF to run like a dawg for me is all the memory it soaks up (holding rendered of pages that you might go BACK to, I think). I would like a control to put FF in a lean-and-mean mode when I have other memory-hungry tools running such as compilations.

Rgds

If someone wants an idea for content that should do well, a website anaylzing the memory requirements and slow down of the most popular extensions should get a good techie crowd.

Design a few test pages. One simple 100k text only. One with pictures and 500k. One with embedded video. Then test response time with barebones FF and then w/ the extension turned on.

You can even make it community-based and have user-generated content.

Damn, can't turn off that idea-machine upstairs even when it takes my own thread off topic.

Well, if someone decides to use the idea, PM me with the url and you'll get your first customer :)
