can't get ie and firefox to both work

I can't figure out why some pages work in firefox & not in iexplorer. other times it works in ie & not in firefox. what am I missing?

My guess is that you are writing your pages in quirks mode rather than standards mode. It's a common reason for having nearly irreconcilable cross-browser troubles.
