Last week I had FF open, but then it crashed so I reopened it and it said it was already open so I had to create a new user to open a new FF window - anyway, this new user I created is now the default so all my bookmarks have gone - anyone know how I get back to the original user settings I had?

Interesting - have you since rebooted you machine and launched Firefox? Did that clear the problem?

I'm wondering if when you had this original crash there was a stray process still alive that prevented you from restarting with your normal user.

Look for bookmarks.html in the "documents and settings" directory. Depending on your version of Windows, this may be located in the C:\ directory or elsewhere. The name may vary too. The file is buried several directories deep.

You can copy this file into the appropriate user directory and all should be well. To be safe, ensure Firefox is closed when you do this.

As a general rule, when a crash prevents you reopening a program, you should always reboot.

BlobFisk hit this on the head. I have had FF crash on me before, and when I tried to open it again it said that it was still running and wanted me to create a new profile. I found that the firefox.exe process was still running.. I did an end process on that and I was able to start it back up.

The user data should be in C:\Documents and Settings\default\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles. You may need to show hidden files and folders to get to it.

Just had the same problem yesterday. Reminds me of the good old day of Netscape. I actually remember having Netscape 6 and Mozilla complettely mixing each other up, when one crashed, and I created another user, the icons in Netscape were those of Mozilla.

Anywyas, just to say that this User thing is a bit annoying, and I thought that the slimmed down FireFox didn't have this ad-on. They should remove it.

So, back to yesterday, I was in a hury, so instead of rebooting, I created a new user. Now my bookmarks and settings are changed. AHH

I spent 10 min looking for a way to start the User Selection window, but there is no exe to be seen in the Firfox folder. They should at least put one.

I'll try to follow the steps u guys list here

Your old profile is still there.
But FF always starts up with the last profile used, so you'll have to use the profile manager to switch back.

Close FF and restart it with "firefox.exe -p"
That will run the profile manager. Just select your original default profile and everything will be back to normal.
