I'm using FireFox 1.0.2. It gave me a pop-up saying a critical update to 1.0.3 is available. I've been through this before and do not want to loose all my extensions and some other settings by downloading the complete new version, so I only wish to update my current one.

I went to Tools > Options > Advanced > Software Update (Firefox checked) clicked [Check Now] and I'm told there are Critical Updates for Firefox and that I should immediately download and install them. I click [Install] and it says "Now downloading and installing updates..." However nothing resolves. The little animated icon just spins away for 5 minutes or more and I eventually get tired of waiting and close it, check the version and it still says 1.0.2.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Firefox auto-update has always been horrible: best not to risk it. For the extensions, they are all in your profile folder so they should not disappear with a full reinstall. I would:

1. Download the full 1.03 version
2. Back up your profile directory
3. Uninstall Firefix 1.02
4. Install 1.03

It all should go smoothly.

Thanks but I just went through this 2 weeks ago, and they all did disappear - however following your suggestions it went without incident :)
